The name of the game with prompts like this one is variety . Each of these books is an opportunity for you to reveal an interest or passion of yours to admissions, and you don’t want to come off as one-note. Did Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel series Sandman blow your mind? Were you horrified by Jon Ronson’s revelations about social media in So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed ? Admissions is giving you the option of checking “required” or “not required” for a reason – they want to understand what interests you both in a formal academic setting and on your own. So make sure you’re not just listing To Kill a Mockingbird , Romeo and Juliet and 1984 . They’re all works of art, but everyone’s read them, so what will they really say about you? When you only choose one or two of those oft-assigned classics, admissions gets a chance to see what from the modern English (or other!) curriculum really resonated with you.

2. Explain how a text you’ve read – fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or literature of any kind – has helped you to understand the world’s complexity. (150 words)

This prompt asks you to discuss a text that has profoundly impacted your view of the world. At CEA, we always recommend that you choose an unexpected work of fact or fiction in order to stand out from the pack. Yes, it’s true that 1984 showed many students a bleak picture of what a Big Brother takeover might look like. However, almost every student in the country is assigned that book and takes a look at those same lessons. What else have you read that stuck with you because of who you are and what you care about? You have a lot of leeway here.. Were you blown away by the coming-of-age story The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian ? How did that graphic novel change the way you think about the Native American experience? Did the thrilling The Talented Mr. Ripley make you rethink the relationship between morality and murder? And if so, how did Highsmith accomplish this? Try to be as creative as possible with your selection here, and think about what books have really struck you at your core and why.

3. Tell us more about the topic that most engages your intellectual curiosity. (150 words)

This is a classic short-answer: a broad, pithy question that demands a specific, personal response. This prompt isn’t just about your academic interests, so rather than starting with a subject area (religion! calculus!) or big category (books! snakes!), try to come up with a few specific examples. When was the last time you went down an internet rabbit hole trying to research something? When were you extremely motivated to solve a problem or create something new? What was the last fact or skill you learned outside of school that truly captured your imagination? Once you come up with good examples, be sure to go deeper into the prompt: have you always loved working with your hands in your father’s auto body shop or vegetable garden? If so, why is this kind of work interesting to you? Are you fascinated by tasks that combine your love of logic with your intuitive, creative side? If that’s the case, what other intellectual pursuits that fuse these two sides do you plan to pursue in the future? The bottom line here is to discuss examples of what truly fascinates you while also reflecting on what these examples say about your personality traits, interests, or learning style.

4. Give us your top ten list.

This is one of our all-time favorite short-answer questions. It’s also one students dread initially, because they don’t know how to approach it. Like many of the other questions on this list, think about what you do or what you are interested in that might also be of interest to admissions. What else about who you are and what you do have you not yet revealed about yourself? Our Founder always jokes that she would list her favorite kinds of pasta in order (because she is an actual pasta addict). Maybe she would make a list of the top ten pasta meals of her life and who she ate them with, to showcase how much pasta is a part of her social life and how she connects with others (it truly is the centerpiece of her world). Think about how you can add dimension to your list and take a collection of favorite movies or music beyond the ordinary. If someone else could submit your list, it’s not specific or creative enough and probably won’t tell admissions anything they really want or need to know.

Don’t talk about things Wake Forest already knows about itself and hears from tons of other applicants. These are things, like weather, location, ranking, or reputation. Also try to avoid taking language directly from the website or brochures. Articulate things in your own words.

Talk about yourself too. Don’t just talk about why you like Wake Forest. Also explain why you are a great fit for the school—that’s the whole point of this essay.

Do your research. Find specific resources, programs, or classes that appeal to you. This includes reading student reviews and doing tours (online, in-person, or both). You might even want to talk to a local representative in your area.

Connect back to your core values. For each part of Wake Forest that you like and want to explore, explain how that relates to one of your guiding principles.

We do want to note that this “Why us?” essay is much shorter than most. You only get 150 words, so you should prioritize information. A lot of our tips in the complete guide are intended to help people who are writing with a larger word count. That said, many of the suggestions are still useful. The key here is to avoid trying to cram in too many things. Just choose 3-4 aspects of Wake Forest you’re really excited about and explain how they connect to your interests and values.

Tips + Analysis

Get right to it. You have very little space to work with here, so it’s best to get right into the meat of why you think Wake is a good fit. This author still finds a way to sneak in a powerful little hook (“I am a storyteller”), but right after that, she’s all business. This is a great model of how you can start with something interesting without digging into your available word count.

Connect your interests to opportunities. If you look at this essay, it essentially follows a predictable formula: thing that the author is interested in + resource at Wake that she could use to pursue that interest further. When your word budget is small, this is a simple way to structure your piece.

Include a summary sentence. At the end of your essay, try to tie it all together. In this case, the throughline is that the author is a storyteller and she believes Wake can help her grow in that capacity. It’s nice that she revisits that theme in her final sentence, reminding us of how all her interests are related.

How to Write the Wake Forest Supplemental Essay Prompt #2

We’d recommend thinking of these short answer prompts as being like a (tiny) smorgasbord—a way to offer brief tastes of your interests and personality. To that end, for the first question, for example, it can be nice to pick a range of titles here—five books all on business probably don’t do much for you. Then with the second, show us a side we haven’t seen yet. With the third … yeah, you get the idea. See below for more tips, examples, and analysis.

1. List five books you have read that intrigued you. Title (150 characters): Author(150 characters): Required reading? Yes/No:

Use most of the space allotted to explain your answer. You’re often given space for 13 words for an answer that could easily be 1-2 words. So use it up! In other words, answer "Why," even if the prompt doesn't ask you to. Do this because your core values may be hard to express in 1-2 words.

Get specific. Don’t just give a generic answer followed by a generic reason for your generic answer. Be creative and use details that give you a distinctive/memorable voice.

Offer a variety of things you're interested in through the books you choose. You get to list five different books, so don’t list five novels by the same author or five books you read for the same class on similar topics. Show your reader that you have lots of different, intersecting interests through the books you choose.

Don’t overthink it. There isn’t some magical key/code with these prompts where, if you choose a certain book, the door to Wake Forest will magically open, to you (although imagine that). This is just a chance (well, five chances) for the school to get to know you better. So make the most of them, but don’t over-obsess as though your life depends on them. ‘Cuz it doesn’t.

If possible, choose more not-required readings than required readings. Think about highlighting books that you’ve taken the initiative to read yourself. We all know that people have to read books for school, but it shows that you’re curious and motivated to take learning into your own hands when you read on your own time. If you read a really great book for class that you want to highlight, by all means go for it. But definitely include a couple that were not required.

Showcase a variety of different genres and styles. Look again at this student’s list. This diversity of books is great because it shows that the author has found value in lots of different outlets. In seeing what kind of books she’s drawn to, we get the sense she has a diverse range of interests and values.

2. Explain how a text you've read – fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or literature of any kind – has helped you to understand the world's complexity. (150 words)

Choose something you genuinely enjoyed reading and got something out of. Don’t choose a book just because you think that’s what your admission officer wants to hear. Why? Writing about something you actually like is so much easier.

Find a way to communicate impact. The prompt is explicitly asking you to communicate how the piece you read taught you about the world’s complexity. Try to connect what’s imaginary with what’s real using uncommon insights or reflections.

You don’t have to choose a full-length novel. The prompt is asking for any text you’ve read. That means you could choose a fictional essay or a comic or even a screenplay. In fact, choosing a format that’s a little outside the norm could help you stand apart from other applicants. Again, try to think outside the box. Of course, if there’s a book you really want to write about, absolutely go for it. The key is to be sure to address how it “has helped you understand the world’s complexity.”

The work you choose is important, but you are the focus. Wake is asking you this question because it wants to know more about you . This shouldn’t read like a book review. Make sure you’re also talking about yourself (i.e., your skills, interests, values, weird anecdotes, funny encounters, etc.) in your answer.

Example: (Note that your essay will be shorter than this one.)

One of the most compelling pieces of literature I’ve ever read, Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine, has undoubtedly helped me understand the troubling complexity of racism. Rankine’s book-length poem draws from her own experiences and those of her fellow black citizens, focusing on microaggressions and the surprising and distressing range of platforms and instances in which they occur. Rankine highlights these types of racist experiences from the music industry to the classroom to the U.S. Open, including Serena Williams’ massive fine for her response to several unfair, racially-biased line calls. Rankine helped me to understand the emotional impact of this type of racism, both as it occurs on a daily basis, and throughout the entirety of a career, even one as celebrated as Williams’ is. While reading Citizen , I was also studying the Dakota Access Pipeline crisis and its effects on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota. It could be argued that the same racist attitudes Rankine explores were demonstrated by the U.S. government towards the Sioux tribe. Ironically, an alternative route for the pipeline was rejected because of its proximity to water supplies in Bismarck, a predominantly white town. I couldn’t help but make the connection that the motive behind the decision to move forward with construction of the pipeline near the reservation might be more than just purely economical, but rather, a continuation of centuries of Native American oppression. Citizen enlightened me not only on the incredibly complex issue of racism within our nation and world, but also the role it plays on a more personal, intimate level. As an ally, I am committed to educate myself and do my part to unravel this cultural and interpersonal complexity by confronting my own behavior. (291 words) — — —

Assume your reader has never read what you chose. Don’t reference characters or plotlines from a book without explaining them. The novel that this author chose isn’t necessarily one that everyone has read or knows about. She does a great job of referencing specific themes or moments from the book in a way that’s accessible to someone who might not know much about it.

Make connections. In this essay, the author doesn’t just talk about the book; she connects what she learned from it to studying the Dakota Access Pipeline crisis and the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Not only does this show that she’s interested in current events and motivated to do her own research, but it also demonstrates that she’s able to apply what she’s learning to real-world issues.

Avoid talking down to your audience. When you’re talking about social justice issues like racism that have a deep-rooted and complex history, it’s important to avoid preachy language that alienates your reader. This author does a great job of navigating this complicated topic from an empathetic point of view. She openly considers the way she might change her behaviors to make the people around her feel more welcome. You never get the sense she’s trying to say she’s better than you. Choose your language carefully when you’re talking about real-world issues that may or may not affect the person who’s reading your work.

3. Tell us more about the topic that most engages your intellectual curiosity. (150 words)

Have fun with this prompt. Nerd out. Enjoy yourself. It shouldn’t feel like work to talk about something that genuinely interests you.

This prompt is wide open. If it helps narrow things down, try to think about a specific idea. You can find a whole bunch of them on this spreadsheet full of TED talks . But be sure to credit the source (i.e., name the person whose idea you reference).

Get to the point quickly. Despite the fact that the prompt asks a huge, wide-open question, it only gives you 150 words to answer it. That means you need to be really specific. So try limiting the scope and choosing a topic you can say something (reasonably) meaningful about within the tight word count.

I was eerily enthusiastic when I stood on Omaha and Utah beaches, where American troops had landed just seventy-five years earlier. D-Day, one of history’s greatest war-time phenomenons, has fascinated me since I first studied it. I am intrigued by the small details I’ve learned about in countless books and documentaries. On June 5th, a severe storm threatened to hit, so many of Germany’s most adept commanders were on leave, including General Rommel. Thousands of German troops were disarrayed, contributing to the chaos of organizing their forces. The storm may have made the Allies successful. My curiosity is piqued by the coincidences and intricacies of how nations and leaders strategize against one another and how that contributes to current events. When my history teacher chose to organize our class not by chronology, but by recurring historical themes and attitudes, I found a perfect outlet for my curious mind. (148 words) — — —

Draw connections. This author tells us she has a love of the small details that influence the course of history. She talks about how she found a perfect outlet for that love in her high school history class. It’s great to draw connections between your topic and other activities, classes, or interests you have. If you do, you’ll have two answers for one prompt.

Find unique details. Who knew that a severe storm may have set the Allies up for a victory? Certainly not us. We love that the author used a specific example of how small details influence the course of history. Not only is that just a cool, interesting story to tell, it also shows that the author knows her stuff.

Write in a way that shows you care. The way this author writes conveys excitement. She uses words like “fascinated” and “intrigued.” She makes an active effort to emphasize her curiosity by choosing stories and facts that she had to research. When you read this, you care about what she’s talking about because you know she cares about it. The amount of enthusiasm you put into your work will impact the amount of enthusiasm your reader has for what you write.

4. Give us your Top Ten list. (Theme + Top 10 - 100 characters each)

Choose a theme that you know you can generate 10 items for. You may come up with a clever, niche theme (Ex.: Best Sci-Fi Board Games that Start with the Letter X and End in the Letter Z—okay maybe that’s too niche).

Think of each item on your list as a little window into your soul. Each one should reveal a new bit of information about who you are. By the end, the reader should be able to look back at the list and specifically pinpoint some of your interests, values, or experiences.

Be clever and funny, but don’t push it. Short-answer questions like these are a great time to show your creativity, but don’t try to make something work if it’s not coming naturally to you.

Top 10 Reasons Science Fascinates Me 1. Peristalsis: a weird bodily function allowing us to swallow when upside down. 2. Injecting oneself with a virus in order to build antibodies… and it works! 3. DIY sparklers: lighting different metals on fire and watching them burn a rainbow. 4. A mere 0.01 percent difference in genes is what makes each human unique. 5. Evolution shows how valuable 0.1% of genetic material is in differentiating humans and chimpanzees. 6. Babies have 100 more bones than adults, now 208 bones allow movement and blood cell production. 7. At 4 weeks old, embryos still grow tails that later get dissolved by white blood cells. 8. Aim for variety. On this author’s list, she’s includes some scientific phenomena, a few quirky science facts, and some random objects that remind her of science. Not all of these are the same “type” of thing (like they’re not all people or places). That’s okay. In fact, it’s cool. She’s thinking about science in terms of objects and ideas. For her, science is a multifaceted discipline that operates on many different levels. That’s something you can communicate through the types of items you put on your list.

Get nerdy. The best part about this is that the author is totally geeking out. She has a deep love for biology and neuroscience, which she highlights through the details she chooses. However, she doesn’t use too much scientific jargon. The key to success here is to temper that nerdiness with language that’s accessible.

End strong. The last item on your list is your last impression on your reader, so make sure it’s a good one. The end of this piece is a question. In theory, that might not seem like a powerful ending, but it actually works really well for this author. She’s a curious person, someone who’s drawn to possibilities and ideas. By ending with a question, she emphasizes that she has a curious spirit and wants to keep grappling with interesting ideas in the future. It serves her piece well. Concluding with a question may not make sense for you, but keep in mind that an ending doesn’t have to be conclusive to be powerful.

The Wake Forest University Application Essay

This essay is only applicable to students applying through the Wake Forest University application on the WFU website. If you are applying through the Common App or Coalition App, you can skip down to the first writing supplement.

Other than using the essay to “share on a topic of your choice,” there are no other directions for completing the essay.

Wake forest writing supplement 1a: books that inspire curiosity.

List five books you have read that intrigued you.

In the application, you will have to list the title of the work, the author, and identify whether it was required reading or not.

You will not have the opportunity to explain why you chose to list the books. Therefore, it’s important that each book (or at least a quick Google search of the titles) can speak for itself.

This question does not ask you to rank the five books, so you should feel comfortable listing them in any order of your choosing. While the process is simple, the difficulty in this prompt lies in choosing five titles to list.

You want to be sure that your choices have a positive reflection of your character. Even if you read How to Cheat Your Way Through High School out of pure curiosity and had no intention of using the strategies, don’t list it.

You will not be able to explain your choice, and, therefore, the title could mislead the admissions committee.

Overall, you do not need to list five literary masterpieces, and you shouldn’t list five comic books you’ve read either. Aim for a variety of book types that really show off your personality and character.

Don’t feel the need to shy away from listing a title simply because it was required reading for school. Oftentimes, these will be the titles that the admissions committee is most familiar with.

If you can’t remember those titles, search online for “common titles for high school required reading” or ask your teacher what they assigned.

You should easily be able to find a list to jog your memory or, at the very least, be able to give a summary of the book to get the title from someone else. If you can’t recall what the book was about, it probably did not intrigue you enough to make this list.

If you find yourself well and truly stumped, take a look at the reading list recommended by well-known figures in academia and industry.

For example, there is a list of thirteen books recommended by Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and other prominent leaders. These span everything from George Orwell’s 1984 to David Deutsch’s The Beginning of Infinity. You can take a look and see the rationale behind why they would recommend such books to others. In fact, look at your selections as a recommended reading list for the admissions committee, and you will be able to organize what story about yourself you would like to tell them.

Once again, find balance by not listing all five titles as required or as self-selected reading.

Once you’re all done making your list, take a step back and ask yourself what these books say about you on the whole. Be honest. If you like the general message, move on to the next question.

Wake Forest Writing Supplement 1B: The Impact of Fiction on Your Understanding of the World

Explain how a book you’ve read has helped you to understand the world’s complexity.

In this prompt, you have the opportunity to explain your relationship with a book, unlike in the previous list. Since the question doesn’t specify whether it should be a work of fiction or nonfiction, you’re free to pick the work that speaks to you the most.

If you’re not an avid reader, this might seem an overwhelming question in terms of identifying something that was truly impactful on your thinking.

Conversely, you might be struggling to choose one book among several that you identify as having influence in teaching you about the “complexity of the world.”

Keeping with our previous example of Brave New World , let’s take a look and see how we might construct this essay.

The directive “explain” in the prompt is vague enough to be interpreted in many ways. You might consider:

However you decide to discuss the work, don’t forget to spend time explicitly stating what, in particular, the work taught you. It’s easy to get caught up describing the work and forget to be specific about your experience. This is not a book report where you summarize what you read.

In fact, spend less time discussing the premise of the work. Worst case, the admissions officer can Google the book.

In the case of Brave New World , it is a very well-known dystopian science fiction novel so you can assume that the admissions committee is familiar with at least the synopsis.

As mentioned above, there are many points you could elaborate on, but it would be best to focus on two to three at most.

If you can discuss how the book has shaped how you perceive the world around you, how you have learned something through example rather than by firsthand experience. By doing so, you will be able to write a convincing essay on how fiction has impacted your understanding of the world.

Wake Forest Writing Supplement 2: Your Curiosity

Tell us more about a topic that engages your intellectual curiosity.

A common theme in Wake Forest’s writing supplements is passion. In this prompt, you should, once again, reflect on what you are passionate about. Consider what truly piques your intellectual interest. What topic can send you down a virtual rabbit hole because you’re interested in learning as much as you can?

This prompt is tricky because you do not know what the mindset of your admissions committee might be and you have the freedom to choose any topic you want. As academics, the committee will approach your stance with an open mind so long as you articulate your argument and do not cross into inappropriate territory.

Choose a topic that holds weight and is truly important to you.

When crafting your answer, don’t get too high-minded or lofty. You can keep it simple rather than listing everything you know on the subject. Remember, the admissions committee wants to hear about you, not your ability to summarize an entire topic. If you spend over 50 words defining the topic, you’re spending too much time on background info.

Describe a community that is important to you. How has that community prepared you to engage with, change, or even build the Wake Forest Community?

Every college wants to know that its new freshmen are going to be happy and successful at their university of choice, and Wake Forest is no exception. Community is an important theme at Wake Forest, and the admissions committee wants to know why you personally care about fostering a sense of community in your life.

To tackle this question, first consider what groups of people have had the most profound impact on your life over a significant period of time. Perhaps it’s a sports team, a club, or a volunteer group you participate in. After you identify your group, delve into the nuance of its influence on your life.

Once you’ve identified your community, you’ll want to connect what you’ve reflected on to your future at Wake Forest.

Wake Forest Writing Supplement 4: Self-Selected Top 10

Give us your top ten list.

Yes, you get to create your own top ten list! There are no explicit instructions as far as assigning a theme to your list, but it is a good idea to give your list some structure. What else do I want admissions to know about me?

Perhaps you are a connoisseur of foreign food or music buff or an amateur film critic, whatever it is that you find interesting and worthy of sharing with the admissions board, be as specific as possible.

By assigning a theme to your list, you will help admissions understand another aspect of what is important to you. Also, you might consider staying away from providing another list of books. You’ve already done this in the first prompt. This is where you can express another side of yourself that the admissions committee has not learned about yet. Don’t waste it by creating a list that is similar to one of your previous essay responses. Alternatively, you can make this list random, a Top Ten list of the world. Use this as a chance to include some of the things that have had the most profound influence on your life. You might include your favorite album, artist, country, season, food, person, etc. Unlike the themed version of this list, you have the chance to paint a diverse picture of your passions when you go this route.

The first prompt Wake Forest requires is made up of two parts and gives the admissions officers insight into your interests and perspectives through literature.

Before you list the first five books that pop into your head, take some time to consider the importance of choosing the right books. This is an easy way for you to express your personality—simply by picking books that show you are an experienced reader with intellectual drive, passions, and specific interests—to help you stand apart from other applicants. So picking the books you were required to read in your AP Literature class might not accomplish everything you want.

The prompt asks you to pick books that have intrigued you. So what does this mean? Well you could pick a book you read that sparked your interest in the topic you want to major in. Perhaps you read a book about bioengineering that influenced your decision to pursue a career in that field. Or maybe you read Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s autobiography and that motivated you to become a public servant. Choosing books that tie into your interests and aspirations demonstrates your personality, the types of people you look up to, and what kind of person you might become.

You don’t just have to pick books that are over 500 pages long and seem “impressive” for a high school student to have read. Don’t put down War and Peace if you struggled to get through the book and didn’t enjoy it. Consider including books that are meaningful to you and hold a special place in your heart. Maybe Green Eggs and Ham was the first book you ever read by yourself and it was the reason you started reading. If there is a book you used to read with your parents every night when you were little, you can also include that in your list.

When you are compiling the list of five books, the most important thing to remember is that each book should reveal something about your personality. If you don’t feel a book is an accurate representation, try picking a different one.

Once you have your five books, you can go onto the second part of this prompt which requires you to elaborate on your choices. Since the prompt asks for any work of fiction, you don’t necessarily have to write about one of your five books—especially if you chose five nonfiction books.

The process of writing this essay is very similar to your thought process for picking the previous books. You only have 150 words to convey your attachment and this book’s significance to you so don’t spend too much time discussing the plot of the book. Instead, jump right into the essay with an anecdote or maybe even your favorite quote from the book. The point of this essay is to show the admissions committee your ability to process and analyze books, and how your analysis of books helps you confront the world.

While “understanding the world’s complexity” might sound confusing, think about any example from a book that you think about in your daily life and use to cope with reality. If there is a certain character who faced similar challenges to yourself and found a way to persevere, you could write a personal story about how that character inspires you. Or maybe you read a dystopian novel like the Hunger Games or 1984 that helped you see parallels between a fictional society and your own.

Just be careful and remember that if you choose a mainstream, pop-culture book, your essay has to be very personal to show how the book affected you in a way different from anyone else. For example, anyone can say that Katniss from the Hunger Games helped you understand the importance of standing up for what is right. Instead, you could consider talking about how her rebellion against the government made you look into injustices in your own country, and after seeing what she was able to accomplish, you found the courage in yourself to reach out to local officials, or start a club in your school to demand change.

Tell us more about the topic that most engages your intellectual curiosity. (150 words)

This supplemental question is designed to give the admissions officers more insight into you and how you think. They want to hear about your intellectual curiosity, or more simply put: why you like to learn. Every university is looking to admit engaged students who are generally intrigued by learning, so it’s very important that your voice and excitement come through in this essay.

You aren’t limited to only discussing a subject in school you enjoy. Here are a few different approaches to this essay you could take:

Think about what interests you, something you could talk about for hours on end, or something you desperately want to find the answer to. Asking yourself these questions will help you come up with a topic that you can delve deeper into. You want to be sure your topic is not only exciting for you, but also can be connected to something more personal and intellectual.

For instance, a student who is fascinated by Latin American culture could discuss her interest in the Carnival celebrations of Brazil and how learning about these celebrations have helped her to connect with her Brazilian roots, as well as the world history surrounding those roots.

Alternatively, a student could use this essay as an opportunity to discuss his favorite hobby. For example, a student who loves to collect coins could discuss how the sheer volume of coins produced fascinates him, how he’s gotten to meet people across the country because of his collection, and that coins have helped him to develop a deeper understanding of the financial underpinnings of America.

Whatever route you decide to take in this essay, make sure that you truly express the nuances of your fascination with the topic. As long as you can show how the topic sparked your desire to continue learning, whether that be about yourself or the world, you will be in good shape.

Describe a community that is important to you. How has that community prepared you to engage with, change, or even build the Wake Forest community? (150 words)

This next prompt is a chance for you to build on your involvement in something that is meaningful to you. A community can be justified in a multitude of ways, so feel free to get creative and pick a community that expresses your passions, involvement, dedication, and leadership.

There are two important aspects to this prompt. The first is describing a community you are currently engaged in and why you value that community. The second, and arguably more important part, is to translate your involvement in your community to the Wake Forest community. Especially since Wake Forest is not requiring students to write a “Why Wake Forest” essay this year, we strongly recommend you use this essay to communicate your interest in the school.

So how do you go about doing that?

One approach you can take is to talk about your involvement in a community you notice might be lacking on Wake Forest’s campus and discuss your interest in introducing your fellow students to this community. For example, if a student was a part of a rap group in his hometown, he might see that Wake Forest doesn’t have any student organizations specifically dedicated to rapping. He might choose to focus his essay on the creative outlet rap provided him and how he learned to observe injustices in the world and express his feelings through rap. He could then transition his essay to describe his plan to start a club on campus so other students can share their hardships and perspectives in this community that has helped him grow over the past few years.

Another student might wish to talk about an intellectual community they were a part of that they wish to continue their involvement in at Wake Forest. For this essay, a student could describe working at a neurobiology lab and explain experiences she had that provided her with an insight to the field and more hypotheses she wants to pursue. She would then mention her desire to continue her research with the faculty at Wake Forest, possibly discussing current projects that she is intrigued by on campus.

Other students may focus on ethnic or religious communities that shaped who they are as a person, thus allowing them to be a unique and active member of the Wake Forest community. This choice is a little more traditional, so if you do choose to go this route, be careful not to get caught up in cliches. Rather than talking about the general importance of family you learned from your Latino community, tell a specific story about the time you helped your neighbor because there are certain ideals that are the pillars of your community. Don’t simply say you want to continue to uphold these values on campus, but describe how you intend to extend your community’s values to your new peers who might be unfamiliar with them.

As you write this essay, keep the idea that you have to show how you fit into the campus community in the back of your mind. Everything you write in this essay should prove to the admissions officers you are a dedicated and passionate community member who would be an asset to the Wake Forest community!

The first few things that come to your head will probably be generic: favorite movies, bucket list destinations, favorite singers, favorite foods. However, we urge you to give this prompt some thought and come up with a really creative list that is distinctively you.

You might also consider something even more personal, such as:

While these examples are fun and more creative, the bottom line is that this question is all about you and your personality. Just be cautious that you don’t pick things that require more than a few words because you are only allotted 100 characters per response. Picking your top 10 quotes might be a cool idea but you might not have the space for it.

At the end of the day, admissions officers are using this question to see how creative you are and what interests you, so make sure, whatever you choose, your personality shines through.

If he had indeed dreamt about the trip he was sent on and meeting the devil, I think his nervousness would have been described in more detail then it was. Concentrating more on the anxiety he was feeling would have led the reader to believe that the events were not real. I also saw this story as an allegory. I saw the allegory after reading the story two times. I think it is centered on Goodman Brown having a bumpy past and that he wants to go beyond his past and reach heaven. The characters names also show the religious allegory in the story. The names Goodman and Faith are used and the characters are then soon faced with terrifying evil. I think that Goodman Brown and his wife, Faith’s names symbolize that they are good, religious people and that Goodman is making up everyone being evil in his head. I found an essay by Alexa Carlson that described the symbolism in light vs. dark, forest vs. town, nature vs. human, and fantasy vs. reality. Coach Bio: Forbes played his college basketball at Southern Arkansas. Forbes made the move to Division I and bounced around as an assistant with Idaho, Louisiana Tech, Illinois State, Texas A&M and Tennessee. He was fired from Tennessee as a part of the NCAA recruiting violations scandal surrounding Bruce Pearl. Forbes returned to junior college as the head coach of Northwest Florida State for two seasons before returning to Division I as an assistant with Wichita State.

Forbes got his first Division I head coaching job with East Tennessee State in 2015. He won at least 24 games with East Tennessee State in five seasons, winning the Southern Conference twice. His success there led him to take over at Wake Forest in 2020.

Last Year: Wake Forest were one of the many casualties of the weak ACC last season. Despite getting the fifth seed in the ACC tournament, an overtime loss to Boston College resigned the Demon Deacons to the NIT. Wake would fall in the quarterfinals to Texas A&M.

Last Game: Wake Forest let a nine-point second half lead slip as Boston College went on a furious 27-3 run over seven minutes to take a 15-point lead. The Demon Deacons battled back to tie the game late, but a Makai Ashton-Langford jumper with three seconds left gave Boston College a 71-69 win.

Syracuse men’s basketball plays its last game of the regular season against Wake Forest at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday, March 4 (3/4/2023) at 5 p.m. EST.

Syracuse is coming off a blowout loss to Georgia Tech, 96-76, in yet another game where the team struggled defensively. It’s the fourth straight loss for the Orange, and the third game in a row where Syracuse has allowed their opponent more than 90 points.

Saturday is Senior Day, and a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Syracuse’s NCAA Tournament win in 2003, but things look markedly different now for head coach Jim Boeheim. His signature 2-3 zone defense has not been getting results, and Boeheim took responsibility, saying, “It’s my defense and we’re not able to stop anybody with it.”
